Tignes Ski Accommodation

Ski accommodation options in Tignes have broadened their appeal since the resort was first established in the 1960's. Back then a few cheaper two and three star hotels were offered as well as lots of rather drab apartment blocks with their oh-so-tight-for-space ubiquitous self-catering units.
Since the turn of the century much has been done to improve the overall look of Tignes Le Lac and its wider appeal. The main road through Tignes Le Lac up to Tignes Val Claret was put underground and the Le Lagon Tignes aquatic centre offered a new excellent resort facility. New catered chalets have been built in the Les Almes area of Tignes Le Lac with a handful of genuinely luxury chalet options now on offer.

The different ski chalet companies of Tignes
Although there are some really luxurious chalet options offered by both G C Kollection (in Tignes Les Brevieres) and Alpine Culture the chalet culture in Tignes remains resolutely good value. There are therefore quite a few cheaper priced chalet properties offered by holiday companies like Inghams, Skiworld, Ski Total and Ski Esprit (the family ski holiday specialists). As all these holiday companies compete pretty much head to head there are only marginal differences in the price and the quality of the chalets they offer. Snow Bugs are a small specialist chalet company with properties in Tignes Le Lac and Val Claret but as yet we do not offer their chalets on this site. White Horizons (based in Tignes Les Brevieres) is a small chalet company offering a more personal service compared to the larger chalet companies and they also offer excellent value. However, these smaller chalet businesses do not offer flight and transfer inclusive packages which means that these elements of your holiday need to be bought in separately.
Although not technically offering chalets we include Club Med and Mark Warner in our list of featured holiday companies below. Their chalet hotel and club hotel accommodation options offer a relaxed and social atmosphere, much like in a chalet, so we include their properties in our chalets in Tignes search engine.

Hotels in Tignes
We feature several hotels in Tignes Le Lac and one in Tignes Val Claret - the uppermost of all the villages making up Tignes. The 4 star Hotel Village Montana which sits in a ski in ski out location in the Les Almes area above the Lac de Tignes has been a firm favourite for many years. The food and the service are both excellent and the various bedroom and apartment options it offers means that there is huge flexibility. Children get outstanding discounts, families should take note, and larger groups enjoy the huge communal spaces of the bar and lounge areas. Add to this a half decent spa area, indoor/outdoor pool and a separate fondue restaurant serving local cuisine and you then have one winning formula.
The Voulez Vous Hotel is the resort's first 5 star hotel and this sits in a location above the centre of Tignes Le Lac with easy access to and from the skiing.
The Hotel Ski d'Or is also noted for its fine cuisine and the Hotel Levanna has an unbeatable location at the foot of the slopes, opposite the main lifts and next to the ski school meeting points.

The residential areas of Tignes
When researching your accommodation options in Tignes it's important to fully understand the resort layout so that you pick the most suited to your needs. There are in fact four main residential 'villages' making up the resort of Tignes: Tignes Les Brevieres (the lowest village which is located below the dam); Tignes Les Boisses (sometimes known as Tignes 1800); Tignes Le Lac and Tignes Val Claret (which is the uppermost village).
The separate areas of Tignes Le Lac
Les Almes
As you enter Tignes Le Lac the area of Les Almes is on the right and extends up the side of the mountain to the north. Here you will find the Hotel Village Montana and quite a few of the Skiworld and Ski Total chalets - all of which are south facing and benefit from lots of sunlight. There are no bars or restaurants in this area but most of the chalets are close to the bottom of the Almes and Combe blue runs descending from the Palafour and Chaudannes chairlifts. This means getting back to your chalet at the end of the day is easy and getting skiing in the morning is likewise not too much of an issue. In the morning it’s a short walk to the piste and then a gentle ski down to the main lift hub and ski school meeting points. The Lodge Aigle is a good example of the chalet accommodation in this part of Tignes.
Le Lavachet
This is on the opposite side of the valley (and therefore faces north). Le Lavachet is an older residential area consisting of old ugly apartment tower blocks built during the 1970's. There are some bars in this area and it's also possible to ski back pretty close to your accommodation in this part of Tignes at the end of the day. In the morning take the Lavachet drag and then ski across and down to the main ski school meeting point for Tignes Le Lac. Better skiers can take either the Paquis or Chaudannes lift into the main ski area.
Le Rosset
This area lies next to Tignes Le Lavachet on the same side of the valley. This area is where you will find most of the hotels in Tignes and also most of the shopping and bars. It is also the site used by the weekly market selling delicious cheeses and other mountain fare. With easy access to the slopes and the main apres ski options this is the preferred area when looking for a chalet or hotel.
Le Lac and Tignes Le Bec Rouge
These two areas merge into one another and lie along the Northern edge of the Lac de Tignes. Le Lac has the shops, ski school offices and bars of the ugly but practical Palafour building and Le Bec Rouge is purely a residential area. The Chalet Arktic is located in Le Bec Rouge and enjoys great South facing views over the Lac de Tignes which for most of the winter season is frozen over.
The separate areas of Tignes Val Claret
All the chalets and hotels in Tignes we feature have Google map positions that we have carefully researched and noted. Although Tignes is a practical resort and nearly all the accommodation has easy access to and from the slopes it is still important to consider the position of your chalet or hotel.
