Ski in Ski out Hotels Val Thorens
More and more ski in ski out hotels in Val Thorens are being built as this purpose built resort expands with the increased demand for high altitude skiing. This expansion is no surprise when you consider that this purpose built resort is officially the highest resort in the Alps and with a resort altitude of 2,300m and a local ski area that reaches 3,200m you can be guaranteed good snow cover from late November right through to May. Val Thorens is increasingly the resort that people turn to, especially for a ski holiday either early or late in the winter season.
Ski in ski out hotels in Val Thorens - details & map
The first phase of Val Thorens’ development was not started until the valley road had been extended beyond Les Menuires in 1971. Even by French purpose built ski resort standards, this is a relatively new resort. The initial phase of accommodation development relied heavily on the use of concrete but in more recent years the stricter building guide lines have meant that the once ugly resort has much improved its appearance. In 2013 it won the ‘Most Improved European Resort’ at the World Snow Awards and although it’s no beauty, Val Thorens is far more attractive, especially at street level, than people realise. Being designed as a purpose built resort from its inception has meant that the majority of hotels in the resort are close to the slopes. However, the ski in ski out hotels here are especially sought after, especially by families with younger children looking for the ultimate in piste access.
The newest ski in ski out hotels in Val Thorens
One of the more recent ski in ski out hotels in Val Thorens is the 5 star luxury Hotel Koh-I Nor. The hotel’s name, Koh-I Nor, is Persian for ‘mountain of light’ and is the same name given to the 106 carat diamond (one of the oldest and largest in the world) that currently sits on the front of the Queen Mother’s crown. This hotel is situated at the top of Val Thorens village on the Rue de Gebroulaz and overlooks the whole resort. It is in fact the highest five star hotel in the Alps and from most of the sixty three rooms you have fantastic views over the Val Thorens valley. All of the rooms and suites have large balconies which make full advantage of the panoramic views, and with room sizes varying from 26 to 60 square metres you are sure to have enough space to relax in comfort after a day on the slopes. Everything in this luxury ski in ski out hotel is decorated in a modern alpine style, with an array of luxury furnishings in the comfortable lounge and bar areas. The hotel also offers three restaurants – an international restaurant which serves dishes from around the world; La Cave, which serves local specialities, and the brasserie which serves simpler options. As you would expect the Koh-I Nor has everything you could want from a luxury hotel. One of the standout facilities is the enormous spa which has two swimming pools, sauna, steam room, hot tub, salt wall, solarium and ice fountain. There is also a great children’s play room here with table tennis and other toys for children of all ages. Without doubt the Koh I Nor is one of the finest ski in ski out hotels in Val Thorens.
Another of the new luxury ski in ski out hotels in Val Thorens is the fantastic Hotel Altapura. This fine property was interior designed by the well known, Jocelyne Sibuet, who also created the beautiful Fermes de Marie in Megeve. The Altapura’s style, though, is in stark contrast to the Fermes de Marie, the latter is very traditional in feel whereas the Alta Pura in unashamedly modern in every way. Its huge sloping glass frontage stands out amongst the rest of the resort’ s block architecture but the cutting edge Scandinavian interior provides a chic and cosy atmosphere. It was recently featured in Conde Nast Traveller’s ‘Hot List’and it’s not hard to see why. Wooden walls and furniture, fur throws, large stone bathrooms and a Mac Mini in every bedroom, all of the details exude style and create a refined atmosphere. The hotel is situated at the base of the slopes with easy access to the children’s nursery ski area and only a short walk from the resort’s centre. The hotel has three great restaurants to choose from - the a la carte, brassiere and fondue restaurant, La Laiterie, all of which make a fine choice.
One of the original ski in ski out hotels in Val Thorens
One of the original ski in ski out hotels in Val Thorens is the Hotel Le Fitz Roy and being one of the first hotels to be built it has a fine location. For 20 years its large sunny terrace has overlooked the nursery slopes and is still one the best lunch spots in Val Thorens. When you arrive for lunch at the Le Fitz Roy it is immediately clear that you have arrived at a luxury hotel. You are greeted by courteous and welcoming staff ready with boot warmers and faux fur slippers for you to slip into. The food matches the fine service and the white chocolate mousse is especially recommended. Although this is one of the oldest ski in ski out hotels in Val Thorens it has recently been refurbished to bring it up to a new high level of luxury. The Le Fitz Roy likes to be considered as a grand family chalet rather than a hotel and its cosy style and size is where it differs from the two properties mentioned above. Whereas the Koh-I Nor and Altura Pura are large, grand hotels the 5 star Hotel Le Fitz Roy feels intimate and friendly. Although it is smaller than the two new arrivals guests can still enjoy fine spa facilities with a lovely indoor pool, delicately carved from the mountainside, along with a sauna and steam room.
If you like your luxury and want easy access to the slopes then the luxury ski in ski out hotels in Val Thorens make the perfect choice. This purpose built resort may not trip off the tongue as easily as Courchevel 1850, Zermatt, Val d’Isere and Verbier when it comes to naming resorts with great hotels but Val Thorens is coming up in the world of luxury ski holidays. For the moment these great ski in ski out hotels in Val Thorens do not come with a price tag to match but it may not be long before they do.
