Overview
The Albana was originally built and 1962 and then totally remodelled in 1989 - it is a modern, stylish hotel with a traditional twist. The atmosphere is one of elegance and style and the bar has been described as snazzy (not sure of the correct usage of snazzy but you get the picture). There are three restaurants: French, Thai and Japanese (with sushi bar, Fuji of Zermatt) and the cooking and service in each is superb. The rooms are simply decorated, extremely clean and serviced daily. The bathrooms are spotless and the heated towel rail with a pull-out drying rack is a nice touch. The free Wi-Fi access works flawlessly although you won't get a signal if you're up on the 4th floor. But this gives you an excuse to sit in the tastefully decorated bar and enjoy a drink or two. The staff are extremely attentive and helpful and they will gladly give recommendations for restaurants outside of the hotel. However, we recommend eating in!
Less than 5 minutes' walk (300m) to the centre of Zermatt and 8 minutes' walk (800m) to the Matterhorn Glacier Paradise lift. The ski bus stops close by.
With only 35 rooms the feel is more like a large chalet than a formal hotel. Great rooms and a choice of cuisine make this one of our favourite hotels in Zermatt.
