Overview
The approach to Avoriaz is stunning - the town is perched on a high cliff face. The resort is entirely car-free and the only mode of public transport are horse drawn sleighs which lend a rather magical air to this purpose built resort.
The Hotel des Dromonts is the only hotel in the resort and has a central position offering guests true ski in ski out access. The hotel's interior is stylish - the lobby/lounge area feels a bit like a kitsch US lodge - lots of wood and open fires but with very contemporary decor. The room decor is plain in comparison but perfectly adequate. There are only two standard rooms which are fairly compact. We suggest therefore booking the more comfortable superior rooms.
As with most buildings in Avoriaz, the Hotel Les Dromonts takes a bit of getting used to; different, quirky are just two words but there are others we could use. The rooms are on the small side. However, the warm and cosy atmosphere more than makes up for this. What you do get at the Dromonts is a ski-in ski-out location which is great for families and those who don't like walking in ski boots. In addition you get some of the finest food in the Alps as the hotel is owned by the French equivalent of Gordon Ramsay!
