Best Mountain Restaurants Portes du Soleil
For many the wide selection of high quality mountain restaurants in the Portes du Soleil is a good enough reason on its own to book their ski holiday to this region. It's hard to tell exactly how many restaurants there are in total. Some say there are 90 mountain huts and restaurants, others report the number at over 100. Whatever the actual number is there is certainly a huge choice of on-slope restaurants in Avoriaz, Morzine, Les Gets and the other villages that make up this enormous ski region (with over 600km of pistes).
The best restaurants for lunch will definitely get booked up so you cannot expect to rock up on your skis at 1pm and find an available table for your party. Our advice is to plan your day's ski itinerary at least 24 hours ahead of time and make the necessary reservation. If you are travelling in a peak week of the season then you may wish to make table reservations even before you arrive in resort.
Most of the mountain restaurants in the Portes du Soleil area are small and traditional - hence their charm. The menus generally offer the local dishes of tartiflette, charcuterie platters, fondues, and in Switzerland, delicious rostis. The more standard fare of burgers, spaghetti bolognaise, 'steak frites' and mountain salads are also ubiquitous in the region. The prices are very competitive so that a family lunch in the Portes du Soleil area will be significantly cheaper than in the larger resorts of the Three Valleys and Espace Killy (France), and Verbier and Zermatt (Switzerland).

Furthermore how quickly you can ski from one sector of the Portes du Soleil to another will depend on many factors - the weather and snow conditions, how quickly you ski and whether or not you take a wrong turning along the way. These elements will all affect your journey time.

This stylish and atmospheric eatery was created in the late 1970's when an old grange was converted from dereliction into a restaurant serving traditional mountain fare. We add to our list even though it's not strictly speaking a mountain restaurant purely because it deserves special mention. Besides, with its interior wood paneling it feels very much the mountain restaurant. Google map co-ordinates: 46.185380, 6.698818- Access time from Morzine: 10 minutes
