Morzine Ski Accommodation

Morzine accommodation - Chalet Joux Plane

There is a huge choice of ski accommodation options in Morzine, although until very recently it has to be said that most of these options are for budget and mid-priced ski chalets and hotels.

Prices and availability for all ski chalets in Morzine

The large working town of Morzine has a lot of heart and character and has always been very popular with British skiers who love the short airport transfer time (one hour), the enormous ski area which is mostly suited to intermediates and the wide range of on-mountain dining and in-resort apres ski bars.

Since 2010 there is a small but growing number of true luxury ski chalets in Morzine which offer top notch accommodation at a fraction of the price that similar chalets in Courchevel, Verbier or Val d'Isere would command. What the resort needs now is a luxury hotel accommodation option - we live in hope.

The residential areas of Morzine

Morzine is a surprisingly large alpine town so it is vital to book ski accommodation that either has easy access to a main lifts or to the resort centre. Although there are a few chalets and hotels that are located close to a main lift and also to the centre (for example Chalet Nevada) more often than not you have to make the decision between ease of access to either lift or town centre.

The old centre

The resort of Morzine is for the most part strung out along La Dranse de Morzine River which naturally divides the resort in two. The old centre of the resort is on the fairly flat left (western) bank of the river. There are three main lifts situated in this part of the resort, the Pleney gondola and chairlift, and also the Super Morzine gondola. The Pleney lifts access the shared ski area with Les Gets which is best suited to beginners and intermediates looking for some gentle, wide runs. The Pleney nursery slopes lead skiers back to the bottom of the Pleney gondola station and chairlift and the chalets in Morzine situated near the foot of these slopes and lifts are hot property and the most sought after. Chalet George is a good example.

The Super Morzine gondola crosses the river and climbs in the opposite direction to the Pleney lifts to an altitude of 1,440 metres. Here you can connect with the Zore Chairlift taking skiers on to 1,740 metres from where it is a simple ski and one more lift to connect to the centre of snow-sure Avoriaz at 1,800 metres in altitude. Once in Avoriaz the mighty Portes du Soleil ski area, taking in the Swiss resorts of Champery and Champoussin as well as Chatel on the French side of the border, opens up to you.

Route d'Avoriaz

The right bank of the river has been developed in more recent years. The chalets here have stunning south westerly views overlooking the centre of Morzine towards the Pleney slopes but these chalets are usually a 10 to 15 minute walk from either the Super Morzine gondola station or the centre of the resort. Chalets in Morzine on this side of the river usually have a minibus or driver service to get around this issue but we recommend checking that your chosen chalet has a driver service before you book.

Prodains and Nyon cable cars

There are a growing number of chalets in Morzine which are either situated at the foot of the Prodains or Nyon cable car stations. The old cable car at Prodains was replaced a few years ago with a new machine which now means that queuing is unheard of. This new lift also whisks skiers to the heart of Avoriaz in just a couple of minutes and also stays running well into the night giving guests plenty of apres ski opportunity in Avoriaz before they have to return down to their chalet in Prodains. Chalets in Morzine that are situated near the Nyon cable car tend to be large and luxurious and all have driver service included. The Nyon cable car accesses the same Les Gets/Morzine ski area that the Pleney lifts do but given the location of the lift away from Morzine centre there are few queues.

Pied de la Plagne

At the North Western end of Morzine (along the Route de la Plagne) there are a number of cheaper catered chalets situated towards Pied de la Plagne. Often these cheaper chalets in Morzine do not come with a driver service which means guests staying in these properties will either have to walk to and from the centre of Morzine and the lifts (which is do-able but fairly arduous) or rely on the rather sporadic free public bus service.
